The Tales of Dunk and Egg Series. They blew us away. Dragon, Sword and King by Robert Silverberg. The foreign editions have no artwork. Tales of Dunk and Egg is a series of novellas written by George R. Prequels to the series A Song of Ice and Fire. Dunk and Egg stories are an ongoing series of novellas written by George R.R. Martin, set in the world of his Song of Ice and Fire, set as prequels to the novels.
If you’re like me, you’re counting the days until George R.R. Martin finally releases The Winds of Winter, book six in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. Which can be pretty hard to do, since we still have no definite idea when it’s going to happen (at this point, I’m just hoping the year starts with a 2).
But what some readers don’t realize is that there’s more to ASoIaF than just the novels. Yep, Martin’s also put out a bunch of novellas set in Westeros that flesh out the world’s backstory and even feature occasional cameos from characters in the novels. (If you thought you hated Walder Frey now, wait till you see him as a bratty toddler!) What makes them a little hard to find is that they’ve been released in different anthologies over the last 16 years. You can still track them down, but you have to do a little hunting to do it. Or you can let us do the hunting for you: here’s our guide to those lesser known parts of A Song of Ice And Fire. Here’s hoping they’ll tide you over until…who knows when?
1. The Hedge Knight
Set roughly 90 years before A Game of Thrones, the Dunk and Egg stories follow the adventures of wandering “hedge knight” Sir Duncan the Tall and his squire, Egg. In this introductory story, Dunk is forced to pretend to be a knight when the hedge knight he squires for dies on the way to a tourney. And once there, he has to fight for his life after he falls afoul of an angry Targaryen prince.
Where you can find it: You can either pick it up in the Nook version of the anthology Legends Volume II, or in the George R.R. Martin retrospective Dreamsongs Vol II. If you want to read it in comic form, there’s also graphic novel The Hedge Knight.
2. The Sworn Sword
Dunk finds his devotion to chivalry tested when a feud breaks out between his sworn lord and the lord’s neighbor, a beautiful widow who must defend her honor.
Where you can find it: It was published in Legends Volume II and as the graphic novel The Hedge Knight II: The Sworn Sword.
3. The Mystery Knight
Dunk and Egg travel to a wedding tournament to fill their bellies and win some coin, only to be confronted with the growing threat of an armed rebellion.
Where you can find it: The anthology Warriors.
4. The Rogue Prince, or, A King’s Brother
Written in the style of an archmaester’s historical treatise, this novella details the life of Prince Daemon Targaryen, the infamous womanizer and dragon-rider, along with all the incidents that would lead to the bloody civil war known as The Dance Of The Dragons.
Where you can find it: The anthology Rogues.
5. The Princess and The Queen, or, The Blacks and The Greens
Picking up right where he left off in The Rogue Prince (although that was published after this story), Archmaester Gyldayn gives the full story behind the The Dance of the Dragons. If you’ve ever wondered just how dragons were used in battle, or how they died out, this story tells you everything.
Incidentally, this novella was written to replace another Dunk and Egg story, “The She-Wolves of Winterfell.” Here’s hoping that one gets published eventually, presumably in the Dunk and Egg collection that Martin has discussed releasing some day.
Where you can find it: The anthology Dangerous Women.
Oh, and while you might see some reference to other ASoIaF novellas (specifically, Blood of the Dragon, Path of the Dragon, and Arms of the Kraken), don’t be fooled. Those aren’t new material, but excerpts from the existing novels that ran in various magazines before the books came out!

The Dunk and Egg stories are an ongoing series of novellas written by George R. R. Martin, set in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, prequels to the main novels. The stories relate the adventures of the hedge knight Ser Duncan the Tall, who would become a legendary member of the Kingsguard, and his squire Egg, who would become King Aegon V Targaryen of Westeros. The stories begin with their meeting eighty-nine years before the events of the main novels (209 AC), and may cover the events until the deaths of Duncan and King Aegon.[1]
Three novellas have appeared so far: The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight. Six to twelve stories in the series are planned.[2]

Publications
Three novellas have been published:
- The Hedge Knight, originally published August 25, 1998 in the Legends anthology, edited by Robert Silverberg[3], later also in Dreamsongs Volume II[4] and as a stand-alone graphic novel.[5]
- The Sworn Sword, originally published in Legends II anthology series[6], later also in Legends II: Dragon, Sword and King[7] and as a Graphic Novel.[8]
- The Mystery Knight, originally published in 2010 as part of the Warriors anthology [9] and later in Warriors 1.[10]
These three stories were collected in one book, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (2015).
Graphic novels of these three stories have also been published. The most recent graphic novel, adapting The Mystery Knight, was released on August 8, 2017.[11][12]
Future
Planned Installments
George R.R. Martin has said that he would like to write a number of these stories (varying from six to twelve from interview to interview) covering the entire lives of these two characters. A fourth installment, currently untitled, but with the working title The She-Wolves of Winterfell, has been described by Martin. It will feature Ser Duncan the Tall and Egg at Winterfell, where they will meet the so-called 'She-Wolves'. Originally, it was planned that this fourth Dunk & Egg novella would be published in the Dangerous Women anthology Martin was co-editing with Gardner Dozois. However, when unable to make the deadline, Martin submitted The Princess and the Queen, an abridged version of a piece he had written on the civil war Dance of the Dragons.[13]
Besides The She-Wolves of Winterfell, Martin also has a fifth tale roughed out in his head, which has the working title The Village Hero. This novella is set to take place in the Riverlands,[13] after the events of 'She-Wolves'.[14] Regarding the completion of these two novellas, Martin has stated the following:
There's no telling when I will have time to finish either of these, or which one I will write first. I don't expect I will know more until I've delivered THE WINDS OF WINTER.[13]
Further working titles for future Dunk and Egg stories have been revealed by Martin.[14]

Collections
While the original intent was to publish all the Dunk & Egg tales in a series of anthologies (as was done for the first three), and then collect them all in one big book, when The Mystery Knight was released it became clear that the stories were too long for this. The current plan, as expressed by Martin, is to release a series of Dunk & Egg collections, each consisting of three novellas. The first of these collections consisted of the three published stories to date, The Hedge Knight, The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight. Originally, the obvious title 'The Hedge Knight' was considered, but due to already existing confusion about the same-titled novella and graphic novels, the first collection was titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.[13] It was released on October 6th, 2015, by Bantam Spectra.
Movies or television shows
Martin had admitted that there has been interest for movies or television shows for the Dunk & Egg tales.
There has been interest, yes, but the rights situation is complicated. Film and television rights to the characters and the three published Dunk & Egg stories remain with me at present... but HBO, when acquiring the rights to the SONG OF ICE & FIRE novels, also acquired film and television rights to the world of Westeros. So if we did Dunk & Egg with anyone else, we would need to remove all the references to House Targaryen, the Iron Throne, etc... not completely impossible, but certainly undesireable. Whereas if HBO decided they wanted to make a Dunk & Egg miniseries or TV movies, they'd first need to buy the stories. That's a much more attractive proposition for all concerned, I think... but if it happens, it will happen years from now, not tomorrow, and not next week.[13]
